THE REGION
Alentejo Coast is an area of Portugal’s seaside located between Lisbon and the Algarve. It comprehends deserted beaches, secluded resorts and typical and rustic villages. It largely retains its natural characteristics. Odemira is located in the heart of the Alentejo Coast, 20km from the coast. It is Portugal’s largest municipality and the administrative and political centre of the greater part of the Alentejo Coast. Although, it remains largely unexplored by mainstream tourism. In a moment where Portugueses seaside villages and cities are already discovered and in many cases overpriced, Odemira represents an opportunity for the future. With its beautiful traditional architecture, its churches and the intrinsic connection with Mira River, Odemira has everything to be next big thing in Portugal’s world renown gems.
Alentejo is Portugal’s biggest province ranking in size with the likes of The Netherlands or Belgium. However, its only 800,000 inhabitants allow for the space that is so rare to find in Europe today. Plus, the Vicentina Coast Natural Park ranges for 110km of coast line and sizes almost at 90,000 hectares providing for its inhabitants and visitors a unique experience.
The Vicentina Coast Natural Park is one of the most extraordinary sea sights and nature trails available in Europe. Its hiking paths, horse riding venues and sea activities are planned in communion with Nature making it the main character in the visitor’s experiences.
With the establishment of several new projects, in particular small, exclusive and secretive resorts with villa’s or small tourism units, the Vicentina Coast represents an upcoming market in the European scene: from the elderly europeans looking for retiring to young and vibrant surfers, a diverse and vibrant multicultural community has been forming in the Alentejo in the last few years. Demand is already big although its prices are still affordable. This trend, im particular when framed in the larger Portuguese context, provides for an excelente opportunity. Also, it offers an important exit strategy: when and if you would want to see your property there will be more than plenty demand for it.
Alentejo represents Europe’s last frontier. In its ocean coast, like the Portuguese epic poet Luis de Camões wrote in the 16 Century, “it is where land ends and the sea begins”. Plenty of space, wild life and an overall retreat from the busyness of city life while keeping the access to excellent gastronomy, cultural life and business opportunities. Alentejo’s wine rank successfully in internal contests and represent the new jewel in the Portuguese and European wine industry. Also, in the Alentejo Coast the Medronho Brandy, quite rare 100% organic alcoholic beverage, is an exclusive product of the region. The restaurants rank quite hight ion the Portuguese preferences, being with the traditional meat dishes of the Alentejo and also the rich and varied seafood that the Atlantic Ocean provides.
The Atlantic Ocean with its blue waters and foamy waves clash into the Alentejo coasts beautiful and ancient cliffs. All along the coast, small, many times deserted, beaches make their appearance in the most unexpected ways. Exploring this treasures make for a great adventure, a touristic attraction and a pleasure for the ones that make the Vicentina Coast their home.
